Santa María la Real de Nieva es una localidad y un municipio de España, en la provincia de Segovia, justo a medio camino entre Segovia y Arévalo. Está enclavado en la comarca natural de La Campiña, en el extremo sureste de la Comunidad de Castilla y León. Como el resto de la comarca de La Campiña, el entorno natural se caracteriza por un terreno llano con ligeras ondulaciones y un clima continental propio de la Meseta.
Santa María la Real de Nieva, capital del Municipio y Cabeza de Partido Judicial desde la reorganización territorial de 1834, pertenece a la ruta del Camino de Santiago de Madrid y su monasterio, catalogado bien de interés cultural, es una de las paradas obligadas para peregrinos y turistas.
La villa de Santa María la Real de Nieva fue fundada en 1395 por el rey Enrique III, a petición de su esposa Catalina de Lancáster. Tres años antes se había encontrado enterrada una talla de la Virgen María en la colina donde actualmente se emplaza el pueblo, (no muy lejos de la aldea de Nieva, al oeste de la actual provincia de Segovia), posiblemente escondida allí durante la invasión musulmana. Este hecho fue considerado milagroso e impulsó la fundación de un santuario en el lugar y un pueblo alrededor del mismo.
Para fomentar el poblamiento se la declaró villa exenta, por lo que sus habitantes no tendrían que pagar impuestos ni ser reclutados en los ejércitos. Estas exenciones fiscales sirvieron para establecer en el poblado fábricas de paños, cerámica y trillos.
Todos los pueblos que componen el municipio, excepto Santa María la Real de Nieva, fueron repoblados en el siglo XI, durante el reinado de Alfonso VI de Castilla.
History of Santa María la Real de Nieva
Santa María la Real de Nieva is a locality and township of Spain, in the province of Segovia, just on the way between Segovia and Arévalo. It is enclosed in the natural region of the Campiña (Open Country), in the southeast limit of the community of Castilla y León. Like the rest of the region of the Campiña, the natural environment is characterized by its flat land with slight undulations and the typical continental climate of the plateau.
Santa María la Real de Nieva, capital city of the township and head of the Judicial Party since its territorial reorganization, belongs to the Madrid Route of the Saint James Way. Its cloister, catalogued property of cultural interest, is one of the obligatory stops for pilgrims and tourists.
The town of Santa Maria la Real de Nieva was founded in 1395 by King Henry III, at the request of his wife Catherine of Lancaster. Three years before, a statue of Virgin Mary was found buried in the hill, were the town is now located (not far from the village of Nieva, to the west of the current province of Segovia), possibly hidden there during the Muslim invasion. This fact was considered miraculous and promoted the foundation of a sanctuary and a town around it.
In order to provide a population for the village, it was declared exempt, that is, the inhabitants had neither to pay taxes nor to do military service. These fiscal exemptions contributed to establish cloth, ceramic and threshing machine factories in the village.
All the villages which compound the township, excepting Santa María la Real de Nieva, were repopulated in the 11st century, during the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile.
